Smart Cities

A smart city is urban area standard where traditional networks and services are combined with digital solutions to benefit both residents and businesses aiming first and foremost to optimal allocation of natural resources and sustainability for the generations to come. The above is not limited to a specific level of operation as a smart city uses smart urban transport, highly efficient water and waste management facilities, along with efficient ways of lighting and heating buildings. All these interact with the city administration and the central government. In order to qualify a city as "smart", certain main characteristics must be fulfilled:
  • technology-based infrastructure
  • environmental initiatives
  • highly functional public transport system
  • confident sense of urban planning with people living and working inside using its resources
The success of a smart city depends on its ability to forge a strong relationship between the state (including regulations and bureaucracy) and the private sector. This relationship is necessary because most of the work done to create and maintain a data-driven digital environment usually occurs outside the municipal state and public sector in general. For example, monitoring equipment for busy roads include sensors, cameras and servers provided by different companies.
Smart cities use a combination of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, software solutions, user interfaces (UI) and communication networks. However, they are based first and foremost on the IoT, which is a network of connected devices, such as vehicles, sensors or home appliances, that can communicate and exchange data. The data collected by IoT sensors and devices is stored in the cloud or locally. Connecting these devices and using data analytics (DA) facilitates the convergence of the physical and digital elements of the city, thus improving both public and private sector efficiency, increasing economic benefits and improving the lives of citizens.
